As an active child who often injured herself, Kathleen became fascinated with the human body and its ability to function and rehabilitate. Through her youth, she competed as a swimmer and sustained injuries to her shoulder. She pursued a career as an Athletic Therapist to help others suffering from chronic disease and injury to regain their strength and mobility. Kathleen completed her Bachelors of Athletic and Exercise Therapy at Camosun College in 2014 committing to 1200 hours of field and clinical practice.

Kathleen stays active by strength training and swimming and prioritizes keeping her body tuned up through her rehabilitative exercises. She urges her clients to take care of their bodies by staying hydrated, nourished and mobile. She believes our bodies need maintenance like a well-oiled machine. In her own words, “Don’t let the little aches and pains turn into big aches and paints”.

What inspired you to choose physiotherapy as your mission?

As an active and reckless young lad, I started getting broken at an early age. I played baseball and hockey competitively and complimented that with jumping off things that were way too high, launching off some sweet bike ramps, trying out crazy stunts on the trampoline, etc.… I was always finding new and creative ways to hurt myself. My parents had me try a number of different treatment approaches for my injuries and physio was the first thing that felt like it really helped. With an interest in science, the human body, and a desire to work with people, physio was a natural fit.

Where did you get your training?

I graduated from the University of Victoria in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology. In 2013, I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy. Some of my post-graduate certifications include:

• GLA:D Canada Certified Therapist - 2023 • Chan Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (CGIMS) - 2021 • Certified Mulligan Practitioner (CMP) - 2019 • Kinetacore Functional Dry Needling – Advanced Course (FDN/IMS) - 2015

What do you do to stay active?

These days my kids keep me pretty active but I also garden, practice yoga, kickbox, golf, hike, and go for walks.

What injuries or conditions have you overcome? How did you resolve the challenge?

I have had acute injuries and/or persistent pain in pretty much every part of my body at one time or another. I have had traumatic injuries and surgeries to both of my knees, repeated shoulder overuse injuries, back pain, neck pain that would go down my arm, tension headaches, migraines and pain in my hands, feet and ankles. Although I am never 100% pain free, I’m pushing 40 years old and feel the best I ever have. I attribute these healings to minimal but regular rehab exercises, practicing yoga two or three times per week, having occasional IMS treatments, and doing my other preferred physical activities in moderation. I have also learned to listen to my body when it needs rest, to be patient, and to not get too discouraged when I have to persevere through some unplanned adversity.

Which of your life’s accomplishments are you most proud of?

I am most proud to have a community and family here on Vancouver Island that I am actively involved in.

What top three goals do you have yet to accomplish?

  1. I would like to teach anatomy at a post secondary institution
  2. Become actively involved with neuroanatomy theory and research
  3. Teach Mulligan Concept or GunnIMS courses

What is your best advice to stay healthy for life?

Figure out what the most important things in life are to you and prioritize the energy you commit to them accordingly. Find physical activities that you love to do (whatever that is) and don’t overdo it. Finding something you enjoy doing and complimenting it with a few supportive exercises is the easiest way to get our weekly dose of physical activity.

What are your words to live by?

“Asking questions is the way to understanding.” - Jonathan Edwards

“Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.” - Albert Einstein
